What Happens if I Don't Pay?
You must repay your loans whether or not you complete your studies or earn a certificate, diploma or degree, or whether or not you are able to find employment.
Avoid Missing Payments
Making regular monthly payments will help you establish a good credit rating.
Your student loan is registered with the credit bureau when you cash your loan agreement. If you miss payments (default) on your student loan, EDULINX, the Government of Alberta and/or the Government of Canada, and/or your lending institution will take steps to recover the debt.
There are consequences if you miss payments on your loan:
- your credit rating will be negatively affected
- your loan will be sent to a collection agency
- any GST or income tax refunds you are eligible to receive will be automatically used to repay your defaulted loan
- the provincial and/or federal governments may take legal action against you
